White Mahakala Initiation
Friday, December 7: 7pm
White Mahakala is an aspect of the Dharma Protector Mahakala, who is in turn a wrathful emanation of the Buddha of Compassion, Avalokitesvara (Chenrezig). By relying upon his compassionate activity, White Mahakala eliminates spiritual and material poverty for all beings, bringing abundance, and especially eliminating outer and inner obstacles to spiritual practice. Specifically, relying upon White Mahakala helps gather the necessary material resources for accomplishing our own individual Dharma practice, and for our Dharma communities to flourish. In light of our recent renovations, this is a timely practice for our sangha to undertake at this time, and we intend on holding regularly White Mahakala practice at Gaden Choling over the course of the winter.
White Mahakala Commentary, Prosperity Vase Consecration Weekend!
Saturday, December 8 – Sunday, December 9: 10am-4:30pm both days
Having a prosperity vase in one’s home or on one’s altar is a special part of many laypeople’s spiritual practice in Buddhist countries like Tibet and Mongolia. Maintaining our spiritual practice requires some amount of material security, so that we have time to meditate, food to nourish our body, resources to attend teachings and to go on pilgrimage, offerings to support our Dharma communities, and so forth. White Mahakala is the wrathful emanation of all the Buddhas’ compassion, and a special quality of relying upon his practice is to create the causes and conditions to have the external and internal resources to do spiritual practice.
Please join us as Rinpoche first leads the consecration of a number of prosperity vases that have been filled with precious substances, mantras etc. outlined by tradition. Rinpoche will seal those precious materials into a special silver-plated vase handcrafted in Nepal, and decorated by Mongolian devotees. Rinpoche then ritually consecrate the sealed vases, so that they will permanently act as a receptacle for White Mahakala, and become a holy object able to bless practitioners.
RInpoche will then give commentary and lead group practice of White Mahakala Saturday afternoon and all day Sunday. At about 4pm on Sunday, participants can purchase the prosperity vases for their own home, business, or altar. These will act as a powerful support for receiving all of the necessary external and internal resources needed to complete our practice, and to maintain everyday stability for ourselves and those around us.
the vases are about 6-7 inches tall, and about 5 inches thick. They get a bit bigger however since they will be covered in silk decoration etc.
