Vajrapani - Mahachakra

Vajrapani, Mahachakra (Tibetan: chag na dor je, kor lo chen po. English: the Vajra Holder, Great Wheel): wrathful meditational Deity, representing the power of all Buddhas.

Description: (from the Mitra Gyatsa) "...above a lotus and sun seat, Brahma and Indra, is Vajrapani with a blue cape, three faces and six hands. The right [face] is white, left red, each with three eyes. With six hands, the first two hold a vajra and a wrathful gesture upraised. The middle two are folded respectfully embracing the consort...possessed of beauty, blue [in colour], holding a curved knife and skullcup. The lower two grasp a snake, at the [level of the] waist, as food. The right leg is bent, left straight." (Description: rgyud sde kun btus, vol.23, folio 215).

At the top center are three teachers of the Gelugpa Buddhist Tradition. At the left is Nagaraja Buddha and to the right is Simhanada Avalokiteshvara. Below the seated teachers is Akshobhya Buddha. At the bottom center is Shri Devi Magzor Gyalmo. To the left is Manjushri Nagaraksha and on the right is Black Garuda.

Tibet 1700 - 1799 Sakya and Buddhist Lineages Collection of Rubin Museum of Art

Hevajra surrounded by the lineage of teachers of the Margapala Tradition of the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism.

The deity Hevajra stands in the middle of the composition, slightly wrathful, blue in colour with eight faces and sixteen hands. He is surrounded by eight retinue goddesses.

Along the bottom are the three power figures known as the Three Great Red Deities (Tibetan: marpo kor sum). At the left is Takkiraja, red with one face and two hands embracing a consort. In the middle is Kurukulla with one face and four hands, standing in a dancing posture. At the right is Maha Rakta Ganapati with an elepahnt head and twelve hands, standing on a rat.

Each figure in the painting is accompanied by a written name inscription in gold lettering.

This is a special form of Tara that is generally only found in Mongolia and the Western regions of China. She is shown holding a wealth vase and a small child indicating that she is helpful for those married couples having trouble conceiving a child.

Shri Devi, Dudmo Remati belonging to the larger class of enlightened protector deities known as Shri Devi, surrounded by protector deities of the the Sera Monastery of the Gelugpa Tradition.

At the top center is Amitayus, the buddha of long-life with an Indian mahasiddha and Tibetan teacher seated at the sides. On the viewers left is Lama Tsongkapa and Padmasambhava on the right. Descending on the left is Vajrakila, Shri Devi Dudsolma, Tshangpa, a red worldly protector riding a horse and blue Damchen Garwa Nagpo immediately to the side.

On the right side is Kurukulla, Lakshmi (Pal Lhamo), Dorje Yudonma and Dorje Shugden. At the bottom center is Chaturmukha Mahakala.

Teacher (Lama) - Tsongkapa

Tibet 1700 - 1799 Gelug and Buddhist Lineages Collection of Rubin Museum of Art

Lord Tsongkapa, Lobsang Dragpa (1357-1419): founder of the Gelugpa School, emanating from the heart of the bodhisattva Maitreya.

In the appearance of a monastic scholar with a yellow pandita hat and the orange patchwork robes of a fully ordained monk he performs with both hands the mudra of Dharma teaching at the heart while holding the stems of two lotus flowers blossoming at both ears supporting on the right a wisdom sword and at the left a book. With the two legs folded in vajra posture he sits upon a moon disc and pink lotus seat surrounded by an ornate gold nimbus of wishing jewels and rainbow spheres. At the front, to the right and left of a begging bowl, sit the two close disciples of Je Rinpoche, Gyaltsap Dharma Rinchen (1364-1432) and Kedrup Geleg Pal Zangpo (1385-1438). Both wear monastic robes and yellow hats each holding a book in the left hand while the right hands assume postures of explication of the teachings.

"From the heart of the Lord of the hundred gods of Tushita, on the peak of a cloud, bright white like a mound of fresh yogurt, Lord of Dharma, Omniscient Lobsang Dragpa, together with sons; please come here." (Gelugpa liturgical verse).

At the top center seated in a western style with the legs in front is Maitreya flanked on both sides with Dipamkara Atisha to the left and Tsongkapa to the right. Below them at the right and left are Vajrabhairava Heruka and Akshobhya Buddha. At the top on the viewers left are the three Buddhas of the Three Times: Shakyamuni, Dipamkara and Maitreya. On the right are the Three Long-life Deities: Amitayus, White Tara and Ushnishavijaya. At the lower left is Green Tara accompanied by Marichi and Ekajati. At the lower left is Chaturbhuja Avalokiteshvara with two accompanying figures.

At the bottom center is wrathful Vajrapani surrounded by flames. On the left is the protector Yama Dharmaraja, blue-black in colour, with the head of a buffalo, holding a bone stick and lasso. Embraced by the consort Chamundi he rides on the back of a blue buffalo surrounded by flame. On the right is White Shadbhuja Mahakala with one face and six hands.
