Wangchug Dorje, the 9th Karmapa, (1555-1603): a great traveler, scholar and practitioner.

Gazing to the side, he holds the right hand up to the heart in a gesture of Dharma explication and the left in the lap holds a folio religious text wrapped in a white and green cloth cover. The head is adorned with the black vajra crown, a synthesis of the gift of the dakinis and the offering of Emperor Yung Lo. Attired in the orange and yellow garb of a monk, he is wrapped in a red meditation cloak, seated above a monk's mat and a blue cushion atop an ornate throne with a green cushion backrest. In front on a red table is a gold pitcher filled with flowers, a Dharma wheel ornament and an ornate bowl giving rise to a stream of vapour becoming a great mass of white billowing clouds supporting a heavenly scene with palaces, teachers and gods of various colour.

Standing at the left side an elderly monk respectfully covers his mouth with a fold of his yellow patchwork robe as he listens to the instructions from the emanation of Avalokiteshvara - Karmapa. At the lower front two seated monks engaged in the moment gesture dramatically.

At the top left is Vajra Amitayus, slightly peaceful and slightly wrathful, red in colour, with three faces, the right white and left blue. With six hands the first pair holds a long-life vase in the lap. The second pair holds a flower lasso on the right and with the left resting against the thigh holds the stem of a white lotus flower blossoming above the shoulder. The third pair holds in the right an upraised curved knife and a white skullcup in the left. Adorned with gold, jewels and blue and green silks, he is seated atop a white moon disc and pink lotus flower, surrounded by a green-blue nimbus and a jade green areola; drifting on a bank of white cloud.

At the bottom right is the wrathful protector Yama Dharmaraja, blue in colour, with a buffalo head. With three eyes, a gaping mouth and two horns, his yellow hair flows upward like flames. The right hand holds aloft a red stick with a white skull at the top, decorated with a red ribbon. The left hand holds out to the side a lasso. Adorned with a crown of five skulls, a green scarf, snakes and necklace of freshly severed heads, he stands atop a black buffalo, sun disc and white lotus seat surrounded by dark billowing smoke.

Recognized by Situ Rinpoche and enthroned by Shamar Rinpoche, this Karmapa spent most of his life living in a tent city travelling back and forth across the wilds of Tibet. Well educated and a moderately prolific writer, two of his more important compositions on mahamudra were the 'Ocean of Certainty' and 'Eliminating the Darkness of Ignorance.' One of his more famous students was Jonang Taranatha. (The names of the three main figures are written in fine gold lettering beneath each).

Dusum Khyenpa, the 1st Karmapa (1110-1193) along with the early Tibetan lineage gurus of the Kagyu tradition

Having an older appearance with gray hair and unshaven he performs the mudra of Dharma teaching with both hands held at the heart in a similitude of a Dharma wheel. Wearing a black vajra crown received as a gift from the dakinis in acknowledgment of his realization he is attired in the orange and yellow robes of a fully ordained monk furthered covered with a yellow brocade meditation cape. On a low seat befitting a monk, with a backrest and cloth brocade cover, he sits in vajra posture before a three-legged table supporting a Dharma book, bowl of persimmons and three wishing jewels.

At the top center is Marpa Lotsawa Chokyi Lodro (1012-1097) the first Tibetan lineage guru of what would later become the Kagyu Tradition - one of the four pre-eminent schools of Tibetan Buddhism. With short black hair, a moustache and goatee he wears the garments of a layman and with both hands performs the mudra of earth witness. At the left is the main student of Marpa, the famous yogin Milarepa (1040-1123), wearing long black hair, a simple white cotton garment and a red meditation belt. He holds the right hand up to the ear and the left is pressed to the ground behind, seated in a relaxed posture on a grey deerskin. At the right the main student of Milarepa and the main teacher of Dusum Khyenpa, Gampopa (1079-1153), performs with the two hands at the heart the mudra of Dharma teaching. Wearing a red cap with wide lappets he is attired in the orange and red robes of a monk.

At the bottom left is the wrathful activity deity of the Padma Buddha Family, Hayagriva (Horse Neck), red, with one face and two hands holding upraised in the right a skull stick and in the left a lick of red flame. At the right is the wrathful lord of the Vajra Buddha Family, Vajrapani (Vajra Sceptre Holder), blue, with one face and two hands holding upraised a gold vajra in the right hand and the left in a wrathful gesture at the heart. Both wear wrathful vestments and are surrounded by the flames of pristine awareness.

Dusum Khyenpa was the founder of the Karma (Kamtsang) branch of the Kagyu Lineage. He served as Abbot of Daklha Gampo monastery after Gampopa and founded Tsurphu monastery - becoming the seat of the incarnate Karmapa lamas.

Rangjung Dorje, the 3rd Karmapa, (1284-1339): Buddhist master, scholar and teacher to the Mongol court of China.

Dignified in a formal pose he holds the two hands to the heart in the mudra of Dharma teaching while grasping the stems of two lotus flowers blossoming at each side supporting an upright gold vajra and bell. Atop the head is the invisible black vajra crown - seen only by those with spiritual purity. Wearing the orange patchwork robes of a fully ordained monk and a meditation cloak he sits with the legs in vajra posture above an ornate cushioned throne with a blue backrest. A small table of personal items stands in front. Behind, a diverse landscape of snowy mountains, clouds, streams and a pool unfolds to meet with a flat grassy expanse in front.

At the top left is the beautiful wisdom goddess of poetry and learning, Sarasvati, white in colour with one face and two hands holding a vina (stringed instrument) and seated in a crouching posture atop a moon disc and blue utpala flower surrounded by rays of light. At the right are two lamas wearing monastic robes and seated cross-legged on simple mats. (The lower lama wears a red cap similar to the black vajra crown of the Karmapas and is likely the first Shamar Rinpoche). At the lower right a monk seated beneath a flowering tree examines a book while a standing attendant monk extends the hands to receive the offerings from a Mongol layman presenting gifts of the seven precious jewels to the Karmapa.

Tsuglag Gyatso, the 3rd Nenang Pawo Rinpoche (1567/68-1633) surrounded by depictions of his previous incarnations. He was a principal student of the 9th Karmapa Wangchug Dorje and later became the teacher of the 10th Karmapa Choying Dorje.

At the top center is Shakyamuni Buddha with Shariputra on the proper right side and Maudgalyayana on the left. Descending on the left are Amitayus - the Buddha of Infinite Life, Shantarakshita, Atisha, Dromton, and Chen Ngapa. Descending on the right are White Tara, Maitripa and Shantideva, Buton (?), ... , and Putowa.

At the bottom center is the deity Hevajra with the Tibetan teacher Marpa Goyag at the proper right and Mar Goleg at the left.

The inscription along the bottom margin of the painting states that the subject of the painting is the teacher Lobpon Pawo along with his previous incarnations.

Marpa Chokyi Lodro, the Translator (1012-1096): the founder of the Kagyu School of Tibetan Buddhism. At the upper right is the meditational deity Hevajra. At the bottom center is the wrathful enlightened protector Shri Devi.

At the viewers middle right is Dagmema the wife of Marpa, holding up a drinking cup. Below her is Ngog Choku Lodro. At the left side are Meton Tsonpo and below him is Tsurton.
