Traleg Kyabgon
A person could be a moralist and yet be the worst Buddhist that you could imagine, because the person has no peace of mind. One can become totally agitated and intolerant of those who don’t share their views, and completely disturbed and neurotic about their moral standards. An obsessive adherence to a code of ethics has no place in Buddhism. Buddhist ethical codes do not have any type of theistic origins. In Buddhism, we see external codes of ethics as guides to interact meaningfully in the world. One should not be bound or conditioned by such a code because self-actualization becomes extremely difficult, and if one cannot become self-actualized and realized, then the whole orientation of Buddhism becomes abused. The goal of realization and enlightenment can completely slip from our hands.
