Those who are suitable vessels to hear the Dharma have three qualities. First, they should have an honest nature; they should not be devious, cynical, or constantly trying to find faults in their spiritual teacher. Second, the disciples should possess the wisdom to distinguish good from bad. And last, they should have a strong interest in studying the teachings. For such a student, the virtues of the spiritual teacher appear as what they are: good qualities.
If a student lacks these three attributes and instead is just waiting to find something wrong with the teachings, it is very possible that the good qualities of the spiritual teacher will actually appear as faults. Even though the spiritual teacher and the teachings may be stainless and pure, by the force of the student’s own impurities they may appear defective. And vice versa: if such a student happens to like a certain teacher, even if he is teaching incorrectly or is full of nonvirtue, those faults will appear to the student as good qualities. Not only may the teacher’s virtues be distorted, the student’s own qualities may be distorted as well. If the student does not have the three necessary attributes, he will mistake his own virtues for faults. This type of misapprehension results from a lack of wisdom able to distinguish good from bad. Therefore a student with a dishonest or warped mind is not a suitable vessel for the teachings.
