Teacher (Lama) - Dromtonpa
(item no. 61314)

Tibet

1800 - 1899

Gelug and Buddhist Lineages

Ground Mineral Pigment on Cotton

Collection of Private

Dromtonpa Gyalwai Jungne, 1004(?)-1064, ('brom ston rgyal ba'i 'byung gnas) was born in Tolung (stod lung) in 1004 or 1005, into the Drom ('brom) clan. His father was Kushen Yagsherpen (sku gshen yag gsher 'phen) and his mother was Ku'oza Lanchigma (khu 'od bza' lan gcig ma). He was given the name Chopel (chos 'phel). As a youth he studied reading and writing for four years with Geshe Yungcho (dge bshes g.yung chos mgon). He took lay vows with Nanam Dorje Wangchug (sna nam rdo rje dbang phyug, 976-1060), who gave him the name Gyalwai Jungne. At the age of nineteen he studied Madhyamaka, rituals, and Nyingma tantra with a lama with the title Drumkyi Khenbu Chenpo Setsun (grum gyi mkhan bu chen po se btsun). With Pandita Smriti (paNDita smri ti) he studied Sanskrit and grammar. He never ordained, but apparently left home after a dispute with his step-mother. In 1042, at the age of thirty eight, he went to Purang (spu hrangs) to meet Atisha Dipamkara and became his chief Tibetan disciple. Alternately, the two met in Panyul ('phan yul). Dromtonpa has come down in history as both an enforcer of Second Propagation ethical standards and a holder of Atisha's tantric lineage. According to the Blue Annals, Dromton was charged with expelling tantric practitioners from Atisha's audience, this despite the fact that at Samye Chimpu (bsam yas 'chims phu) Atisha gave Dromton initiation into tantric systems, including the Doha tradition of Bengal. The Blue Annals credits him with revising the translations of both sutra and tantras, including the Ashtasahastrika Prajnaparamita, and the Jnanasiddhi Tantra. Following Atisha's death in 1054, Dromton took many of Atisha's disciples and returned to Tolung. While there he was invited by a number of local lords to Reting (rwa sgreng), where, in 1057, at the age of fifty-four, he constructed a monastery, primarily under the patronage of Trangka / Pangka Berchung ('phrang kha / phang kha ber chung). Despite remaining a layman, he was renowned for his teachings on monastic precepts. Dromton's three chief disciples were Potowa Rinchen Sal Chogle Namgyal (po to ba rin chen gsal phyogs las rnam rgyal, 1027-1105), Puchungwa Shonnu Gyaltsen (phu chung ba gzhon nu rgyal mtshan, 1031-1106) and Chennga Tsultrim Bar (spyan snga tshul khrims 'bar, 1038-1103). Dromtonpa died at Reting in 1064 at the age of sixty.

Dromton Gyalwai Jungne (1004(?)-1064): the principal student of Jowo Atisha. This composition belongs to a much larger painting set depicting the teachers of the Lamrim (Graduated Path) following the tradition of Je Tsongkapa.

Currently there at least thirteen paintings known to be extant from this very large set of compositions. Only two of the thirteen are in a museum collection. (See Main Page and Outline Page).

Teacher (Lama) - Dalai Lama VI, Tsangyang Gyatso
(item no. 65384)

1700 - 1799

Ground Mineral Pigment, Red Background on Cotton

Collection of Rubin Museum of Art

Dalai Lama VI, Tsangyang Gyatso (1683-1706/1746)

Born in 1683, The Sixth Dalai Lama, Tsangyang Gyatso was perhaps the most popular Dalai Lama. The discovery of Tsangyang Gyatso was kept a secret by the regent Desi Sangye Gyatso until the construction of the Potala Palace was complete. Tsangyang Gyatso was in no way a model of his predecessor The Great Fifth; he enjoyed the life of a layman and is best known for his songs and poems, which remain popular to this day. Painted in the tsal tang style, red background with gold outline, this composition includes the hand and footprints of the Sixth Dalai Lama.

Lord Tsongkapa, Lobsang Dragpa (1357-1419): founder of the Gelugpa School, emanating from the heart of the bodhisattva Maitreya.

In the appearance of a monastic scholar with a yellow pandita hat and the orange patchwork robes of a fully ordained monk he performs with both hands the mudra of Dharma teaching at the heart while holding the stems of two lotus flowers blossoming at both ears supporting on the right a wisdom sword and at the left a book. With the two legs folded in vajra posture he sits upon a moon disc and pink lotus seat surrounded by an ornate gold nimbus of wishing jewels and rainbow spheres. At the front, to the right and left of a begging bowl, sit the two close disciples of Je Rinpoche, Gyaltsap Dharma Rinchen (1364-1432) and Kedrup Geleg Pal Zangpo (1385-1438). Both wear monastic robes and yellow hats each holding a book in the left hand while the right hands assume postures of explication of the teachings. "From the heart of the Lord of the hundred gods of Tushita, on the peak of a cloud, bright white like a mound of fresh yogurt, Lord of Dharma, Omniscient Lobsang Dragpa, together with sons; please come here." (Gelugpa liturgical verse). At the top center seated in a western style with the legs in front is Maitreya flanked on both sides with Dipamkara Atisha to the left and Tsongkapa to the right. Below them at the right and left are Vajrabhairava Heruka and Akshobhya Buddha. At the top on the viewers left are the three Buddhas of the Three Times: Shakyamuni, Dipamkara and Maitreya. On the right are the Three Long-life Deities: Amitayus, White Tara and Ushnishavijaya. At the lower left is Green Tara accompanied by Marichi and Ekajati. At the lower left is Chaturbhuja Avalokiteshvara with two accompanying figures. At the bottom center is wrathful Vajrapani surrounded by flames. On the left is the protector Yama Dharmaraja, blue-black in colour, with the head of a buffalo, holding a bone stick and lasso. Embraced by the consort Chamundi he rides on the back of a blue buffalo surrounded by flame. On the right is White Shadbhuja Mahakala with one face and six hands. Jeff Watt 10-2007 Front of Painting
