图中 释迦牟尼佛右手示触地印,左手钵中药用植物.在左侧站舍利子,右侧站目犍连.

图顶级左侧是罗汉 Angaja ,右边是 Bakula 手中吐宝鼬.

图左下角是 Kanaka Bharadvaja ,右下角是佛的儿子 Rahula.

Hevajra (Buddhist Deity)

Tibet 1700 - 1799 Sakya and Buddhist Lineages Collection of Rubin Museum of Art

Hevajra surrounded by the lineage of teachers of the Margapala Tradition of the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism.

The deity Hevajra stands in the middle of the composition, slightly wrathful, blue in colour with eight faces and sixteen hands. He is surrounded by eight retinue goddesses.

Along the bottom are the three power figures known as the Three Great Red Deities (Tibetan: marpo kor sum). At the left is Takkiraja, red with one face and two hands embracing a consort. In the middle is Kurukulla with one face and four hands, standing in a dancing posture. At the right is Maha Rakta Ganapati with an elepahnt head and twelve hands, standing on a rat.

Each figure in the painting is accompanied by a written name inscription in gold lettering.

Padmasambhava - (Pandita Form)

Tibet 1700 - 1799 Karma (Kagyu) and Buddhist Lineages Collection of Rubin Museum of Art

Padmasambhava, Guru Rinpoche (Tibetan: pe ma jung ne. English: Lotus Born): one of the three principal founders of Buddhism in Tibet. (See Padmasambhava Life-story Painting).

"Miraculous buddha arising from a lotus, unborn, undying, possessing a vajra body, performing the activity of all buddhas of the three times; homage to Padmasambhava." (Nyingma liturgical verse).

Amongst Tibetans, the most popular among the many teachers to bring Buddhism to Tibet in the 8th century, Padmasambhava has numerous forms representing outer, inner and secret aspects. Within the Kama (Oral) Tradition of the Nyingmapa School, Padmasambhava was born in Northern India as the son of a king or minister. In the Terma (Treasure) Tradition he was born on a lotus in the middle of Dhanakosha lake as an emanation of the Buddha Amitabha.

Vasudhara (Buddhist Deity)

Tibet 1500 - 1599 Sakya, Ngor (Sakya) and Buddhist Lineages Collection of Private

Vasudhara Mandala.

"Vasudhara, yellow, with one face and six hands; in a manner happily seated at play. The first right hand is in a gesture of supreme generosity, the second 'raining jewels,' the third with the hand in a gesture accompanying singing. The first left holds an abundant vase, the second a sheaf of grain, the third [holds] the Prajnaparamita text; adorned with all jewel ornaments." This form of Vasudhara arises from the Togpa Chungwa and the Vajravali text of Abhayakaragupta.

Painted in the Ngor Monastery style of Tsang Province, Tibet, the individualized depictions of the lineage teachers in the top and side registers indicates that the painting, created by Tibetan artists, is a second or third generation removed from the original Newar creations of the 15th century and earlier. The Newar artists were partial to generic faces for deities and human figures. This painting gives individual characteristics to the figures and is a good example of Tibetan appropriation of Newar style.
