The actual Arabic comes from "fitna" which can mean disbelief, or the disorder that results from unbelief or temptation. Taken as a whole, the context makes clear that violence is being authorized until "religion is for Allah" - ie. unbelievers desist in their unbelief.

Not only is the Arabic word used in this passage, but it is clearly not referring to anything spiritual, since the physically disabled are given exemption. (The Hadith reveals the context of the passage to be in response to a blind man's protest that he is unable to engage in Jihad and this is reflected in other translations of the verse).

The Meccans were also acting in defense of their religion, since it was Muhammad's intention to destroy their idols and establish Islam by force (which he later did). Hence the critical part of this verse is to fight until "religion is only for Allah", meaning that the true justification of violence was the unbelief of the opposition. According to the Sira (Ibn Ishaq/Hisham 324) Muhammad further explains that "Allah must have no rivals."

Quran (9:5) - "So when the sacred months have passed away, then slay the idolaters wherever you find them, and take them captive and besiege them and lie in wait for them in every ambush, then if they repent and keep up prayer and pay the poor-rate, leave their way free to them." According to this verse, the best way of staying safe from Muslim violence is to convert to Islam (prayer (salat) and the poor tax (zakat) are among the religion's Five Pillars). This popular claim that the Quran only inspires violence within the context of self-defense is seriously challenged by this passage as well, since the Muslims to whom it was written were obviously not under attack. Had they been, then there would have been no waiting period (earlier verses make it a duty for Muslims to fight in self-defense, even during the sacred months).

Unless ye go forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty, and put others in your place." This is a warning to those who refuse to fight, that they will be punished with Hell.

See also the verse that follows (9:42) - "If there had been immediate gain (in sight), and the journey easy, they would (all) without doubt have followed thee, but the distance was long, (and weighed) on them" This contradicts the myth that Muslims are to fight only in self-defense, since the wording implies that battle will be waged a long distance from home (in another country and on Christian soil, in this case, according to the historians).

[57:19]  那些信仰安拉和他的使者的人，在安拉看采，他们是忠信的人和见证者，他们
将获得他们的回赐和光亮。但是那些不信仰并不信我的启示的人，他们是(地狱之)火的伙

(二）偏见

[4: 144]信道的人们啊！你们不要舍信道者而以不信道者为盟友， 你们欲为真主立一个
不利
你们的明证吗？

注意这一句，以真主的名义倡导信教者和不信教者的不合，倡导对不信教者的偏见。不信
道者不能为友，是要被舍弃的。这算是程度轻的，后面还教你仇恨和杀戮。

[60:4]  伊布拉欣和跟他一道的人，对你们是一个极好的榜样。那时他们对他们的族人说
：“我们跟你们在安拉之外所拜的无关。我们不信你们，所以仇和恨已永久地存在于我们
和你们之间，直到你们信仰独一的安拉。唯一的例外(不可效法的)是伊布拉欣对他的父亲
所说的：“我会为你祈求恕饶，但是我不能帮助你反对安拉。?(他们祈求道：)“我们的
主啊!我们仰仗你，我们向你忏悔，你是我们的最终归宿。

这里中间说的一句是，仇恨将永存于信道者和不吸道者之间，批评者可以说这是倡导仇恨
的证据。

[5:82]你必定发现，对于信道者仇恨最深的是犹太教徒和以物配主的人；你必定发现，对
于信道者最亲近的是自称基督教徒的人；因为他们当中有许多牧师和僧侣，还因为他们不
自大。

以物配主包括多神论、无神论、偶像崇拜之类，一些不信道者。英文本用的是多神论者一
词(polythesist)。英文本的翻译是"the most viiolent of people in enmity for  
those who beleive (to be) the Jews and those who are polythesists, ...", 这里
形容violent一词在中文是hatred, 比英文版中对犹太人的攻击程度要轻得多。在中文本
中这样的例子是无数的。

4:160] 我禁止犹太教徒享受原来准许他们享受的许多佳美的食物， 因为他们多行不义，
常常阻止人遵循主道，

[9: 30]犹太人说：“欧宰尔是真主的儿子。”基督教徒说：“麦西哈是真主的儿子”。
这是他们信口开河，仿效从前不信道者的口吻。愿真主诅咒他们。他们怎么如此放荡呢！

[9:30] 犹太人说邬赛尔(以斯拉)是安拉的儿子，基督教的人说买希哈(弥赛亚·耶稣)是
安拉的儿子，那是他们自说自话，他们模仿以往的那些不信者的说法。安拉对他们恼怒了
。他们是多么的邪恶呀!  (仝译)

请注意这一句[9:30]：(以上两段都是）马译经文希望真主“诅咒”犹太教徒和基督教徒
，仝译只说真主对他们“恼怒”了。英文通行译本是这样的，让我们看看：

[9.30] And the Jews say: Uzair is the son of Allah; and the Christians say:  
The Messiah is the son of Allah; these are the words of their mouths; they  
imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before; may Allah destroy them;  
how they are turned away!

愿真主毁灭(destroy)他们，毁灭，诅咒，恼怒，这三个词分量是差很远的，有一点是共
通的，就是中文本永远是柔和的，不直接的。不知道阿拉伯原文是什么，但有一点可以肯
定的就是，英文读者和中文读者看到他们各自的译本，收获是不一样的。

另外，以现代价值标准看，上面许多经文，如对犹太人的攻击，就是在倡导偏见了，反犹
主义是古兰经的一部分，因为犹太教以民族定义认同，对犹太人的仇恨因此上升到民族、
种族的高度。恐怖主义者不断将犹太人和基督徒并列，是有文本根源的。经文并不叫你同
他们契合，而强调你和他们的冲突。

再引两句

[5: 18]犹太教徒和基督教徒都说:”我们是真主的儿子,是他心爱的人.”你说:”他为什
么要因你们的罪过而惩治你们呢？”

[5:51]信道的人们啊!你们不要以犹太教徒和基督教徒为盟友。他们各为其同教的盟友。
你们中谁以他们为盟友，谁是他们的同教。真主必定不引导不义的民众。
